The India Association of Western Washington (IAWW) is celebrating its 25th
anniversary this year. And the Association decided to celebrate this
occasion by including other mainstream and local Asian communities and
honoring their leaders who have been instrumental in building bridges
across all communities for years. Mimi Gates and Bill Gates Sr. are
going to be honored at this celebration for their contribution to the
communities through the Seattle Art Museum and Gates Foundation
respectively. Mimi Gates currently as the Director of the Seattle Art
Museum is working on an exclusive exhibition at SAM titled “The
Royal Paintings of Jodhpur, India" from January –
April 2009. William H. Gates Sr. guides the vision and strategic
direction of the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.
Among other honorees the Association has chosen Phyllis Wise, the
provost and the Executive Vice President for the University of
Washington; Lori Matsukawa of the King 5; International District
Activist Bob Santos; Habib M. Habib of CAPAA; Tay
Yoshitani of Port of Seattle and Former Seattle Schools
Superintendent Raj Manhas. Many other leaders in the Asian
community will introduce these honorees to the audience. “Each
of these honorees have one thing in common: they have been the unifying
force for all communities for generations after generations,”
says the former president and the Chair of the 25th
Year Celebrations Debadutta Dash, “by building
bridges across other communities we can build a stronger and more
peaceful world for tomorrow.” “This
will be a great inspiration for us and our youth to be our future
leaders,” says Murthy Kalkura, the current
president of the IAWW.
Prior to this event the Association will also be celebrating the 139th
Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2nd.
It is being celebrated as an awareness and fundraising event at the
Governor’s mansion in Olympia on Thursday
October 2nd, 2008 by the IAWW benefitting its
Seniors and Youth programs in 2009.
