Two QHR Hospital Clients Receive Nod From Thomson Reuters For Overall Performance Improvement

Two QHR hospital clients are ranked among the nation's top hospitals in Thomson Reuters' 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders survey. According to the survey, Oconee Regional Medical Center in Milledgeville, Georgia, and Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, are among 20 medium-sized community hospitals from across the country that demonstrated the fastest, most consistent improvement over five consecutive years.

Brentwood, TN (PRWEB) September 26, 2008 -- Two QHR hospital clients are ranked among the nation's top hospitals in Thomson Reuters' 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders survey.

"Inclusion in this ranking is significant because it recognizes hospitals that demonstrate across-the-board improvements - from clinical to operational to financial," said QHR President and CEO James L. Horrar. "QHR helps its hospital clients achieve broad-based success every day. To have our work and the work of our hospital clients validated in this way is tremendous. We are proud of both Oconee and Rutherford."

"In the last several years, our hospital has added state-of-the-art facilities, recruited specialty physicians and made our care safer and more effective," said David Bixler, Rutherford Hospital CEO. "This award demonstrates our commitment to continually raising the bar … to delivering quality, efficient medical care to our community."

According to Thomson Reuters, the 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders study rated hospitals on eight factors - patient mortality, medical complications, patient safety, length of stay, expenses, profitability, cash-to-debt ratio and use of evidence-based medicine. Researchers evaluated 2,867 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals grouped into five categories: major teaching hospitals, other teaching hospitals, large community hospitals, medium-sized community hospitals and small community hospitals.

The study analyzed publicly available Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' Hospital Compare data set. It found that 100 Top Hospitals: Performance Improvement Leaders:

  • Went from having more patient deaths and adverse safety events than expected to fewer than expected.
  • Increased expenses only 2.5 percent during the five-year study period, on average, compared with a 17.4 percent increase among their peer hospitals.
  • Increased profit margin from less than 1 percent to 6.9 percent.
  • Reduced average length of stay by nearly a day, despite greater severity of illness.

"This study identifies superior leadership, based on the success of hospital executive teams' long-term strategies for strengthening performance," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for Performance Improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters. "These are true 'Good to Great' leadership teams that have focused on improving quality, efficiency, use of evidence-based medicine, and financial stability in order to better serve their patients and communities."
