Kabul Under Virtual Lockdown for International Travelers, Progress Still Evident for Women's Programs

Women to the World Founder and President Mrs. Doris Aldrich reporting from Kabul, Afghanistan. The situation is tense in Afghanistan, but there is reason to hope. Measurable improvements are evident in the plight of women in Kabul.

Kabul, Afghanistan (PRWEB) September 12, 2008 -- Doris Aldrich, President of Women to the World, reports that even though all roads outside the City of Kabul are closed to international travelers, lives and freedoms for women within the city of Kabul continue to improve through education and micro loan initiatives conducted by faith-based organizations deep within ethnic communities. Health care for the handicapped, widows, and orphans continues to be the major challenge in our efforts to provide life-sustaining services.

Women to the World, working with Afghan women and children since 2002, has reported that even though improved, Afghanistan still holds the highest suicide rate for married women between the ages of 16 and 35 in the world. It's alarming to note that in Afghanistan, average life expectancy is only 42 years of age. Other organizations working in the rural areas continue with boldness and great success as women respond in record numbers to education and job skill training efforts, says Aldrich. They tell our workers that they want to be able to provide health services for their young.

"We see that women hold the secret to the future of Afghanistan. Imagine 1/2 the population of a country paralyzed by ignorance, sickness and poverty. If we can change these numbers, even a little bit, we will be making a giant step forward." -- (Doris Aldrich...reporting from Afghanistan)
