Joe and Daisy Smith Estate Auction to be 3-Day Event

The largest private collection of coins and stamps ever to come up for auction will go under the gavel during a three-day event April 26-28, according to Brent Graves of Great American Auction Group.

Lubbock, Texas (PRWEB) April 5, 2007 -- The largest private collection of coins and stamps ever to come up for auction will go under the gavel during a three-day event April 26-28, according to Brent Graves of Great American Auction Group.

"We have over 30,000 collector coins and over 120,000 collector stamps in this auction," said Graves. "We've spent weeks cataloging this estate. The number of items in this collection is staggering."

Among the coins are Carson City Silver Dollars, Buffalo Nickels, Shield Dimes and Gold American Eagles. "The coins range in dates from 1808 to 2000," noted Graves, "and include all denominations. The stamps range from 1863 to 2000 and include first day covers from the 1930's to the 1970's and plate blocks of most stamps released from World War II until 2000."

"Imagine the history these coins and stamps have been through dating back before the Civil War and even before The Alamo," Graves pointed out. He said the auction also includes over 85 pounds of silver bullion and over 35 ounces of gold.

Lanny Zant, project manager for the auction, explained that over 5,000 lots were divided into categories for the three-day event. Coins, stamps and baseball cards will sell on Thursday, April 26. On Friday, April 27, glassware, silver and brass will sell, followed by real estate, furniture, art, books and other collectibles on Saturday, April 28. Auction begins at 10 a.m. each day. Bidders will be able to bid in person at the sale, or online in real-time using Proxibid. Pre-registration is required for online bidding.

Joe and Daisy Smith owned McKee Wholesale Distributing, a candy and tobacco distributor in Lubbock. The Smiths, along with their son, Matt, were avid collectors. Along with the coins, stamps and baseball cards, they amassed an impressive collection of Van Briggle pottery, Limoges china, Lalique crystal, Roseville pottery, Rookwood pottery, Baccarat crystal, Tiffany & Co.

"In addition," Zant pointed out, "there are some rather unique items up for bids like cartoon reels from the 1930's and 1940's which were shown during movie intermissions, as well as an original 1810 printing of 'The Potters Bible.' Some items in the collection came from the estate of the famed Braniff airline family."

Besides the collectibles and antiques, the estate auction will also offer up a 4,731 square-foot home on three-quarters of an acre. The home features four bedrooms, five bathrooms and a four-car garage, as well as a basement, study, formal dining, formal living room, wet bar, great room, large walk-in closets and three fireplaces.
