Oops, $5.4 Million or $5.4 Billion, Pretty Soon We Are Talking Real Money

Local communities and regions throughout Iowa are focusing on developing and attracting their fair share of the $5.8 Billion tourism and travel industry. Local efforts to encourage and promote local tourism attractions and service industries is key to attracting your fair share of the $5.8 billion tourism industry said Pat Watson, editor of Iowa Beautiful.

Des Moines, Iowa (PRWEB) October 24, 2007 -- Local communities and regions throughout Iowa are focusing on developing and attracting their fair share of the $5.8 Billion tourism and travel industry. Local efforts to encourage and promote local tourism attractions and service industries is key to attracting your fair share of the $5.8 billion tourism industry said Pat Watson, editor of Iowa Beautiful.

Late Senator Everett Dirksen said, "A billion here, and a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money," Watson noted. "Clearly we are talking real money here!"

A Travel Industry Association (TIA) study revealed that the economic impact of tourism in the State of Iowa was $5.8 Billion (recent media reports reported the tourism spending in millions rather than the $5.8 Billion economic impact identified in the study.)

Watson noted that the impact on local communities when tourist stop and spend a day can often be even greater as those tourism dollars not only are spent in local attractions, but also in restaurants, hotels, gas stations, stores, shops, as well as creating jobs and income which is then spent again creating a money multiplier effect which ripples through the local economy.

Local efforts to attract tourism dollars to their communities by creating new attractions are valuable. Local leaders from the city of Traer recently helped create a Salt and Pepper Museum. Throughout Iowa, local leaders and passionate volunteers are driving the growth of Iowa tourism.

The TIA study reports that more than 63,400 people are employed within the tourism industry contributing more than $1.02 million in payroll to the local economies of Iowa communities.

Many of the hundreds of events and attractions that draw tourists and visitors to Iowa operate on small budgets and volunteers. Unable to participate in costly tourism advertising and trade publications, these attractions often are promoted through local resources and free promotional networks, significantly limiting the potential economic impact they could otherwise have if exposed to a broader market.

"The tireless efforts of our volunteers across the state is the true spirit of hospitality that promotes the travel and tourism industry." Most local convention and visitor's bureaus and chamber of commerce organizations have incredible volunteers and are a major factor in the growth and success of Iowa's tourism.
